March 28, 2014
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sara Schmitt, a junior defenseman on the Ohio State women’s hockey team, has been named All-USCHO Third Team, U.S. College Hockey Online announced Thursday.
The Canton, Mich., native tallied 19 points on six goals and 13 assists in 27 league games and was Ohio State’s second-leading scorer overall with 28 points on seven goals and 21 assists. She finished third on the WCHA defenseman scoring chart and tied for seventh nationally in defenseman scoring.
Schmitt is the first Buckeye to receive All-USCHO recognition since Natalie Spooner in 2012. Former Buckeyes who received All-USCHO honors include Spooner (Third Team; 2012), Tessa Bonhomme (Third Team; 2007), Amber Bowman (Third Team; 2007) and Jana Harrigan (Second Team; 2006).
Sara was named All-WCHA Third Team back on March 6. Her sister Kari Schmitt, also a junior defenseman for the Buckeyes, was named All-WCHA Second Team.
The resulting 24 players represent 15 different squads. Minnesota leads with five honors, while NCAA Champion Clarkson has three. Eight players are seniors, while six are juniors. Three of the four sophomores named made the first team.
