Ohio State Signs Four for 2012-13 Season

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team has added four recruits for the 2012-13 season, Ohio State head coach Nate Handrahan announced. Forwards Kendall Curtis, Julia McKinnon and Melani Moylan and defenseman Cara Zubko will join the team that finished 2011-12 with a 16-16-4 overall record.

Forward, 5-7
Highlands Ranch, Colorado
High school: Rock Canyon
Club team: Colorado Select

Named assistant captain for Colorado Select U19AAA team that placed third at nationals … finished 2011-12 season second on the club team with 10 goals and three assists for 13 points … led the Thunder Ridge High School girls hockey team to a first-place finish in 2011 and led the team in points and assists … attends Rock Canyon High School … daughter of Kevin and Susie Curtis … has a brother, Conner.

“If you are looking for a competitor who will do whatever it takes to win, then Kendall is who you need,” Handrahan said. “She is one who is extremely driven to succeed and has all the on-ice tools to be successful at this level.”

Forward, 5-9
Cornwall, Ontario
High school: Ontario Hockey Academy
Club team: Canada U-18

Member of the Team Canada U-18 squad … represented British Columbia at the 2011 Canada Winter Games … won gold with Kelowna AAA teams at BC provincials in 2006, 2008 and 2009 … league scoring champion during the 2009-10 season with the BC Major Midget AAA team … attends the Ontario Hockey Academy … daughter of Bill and Cheryl McKinnon … has two older brothers, Billy and Brett, and one older sister, Lisa.

“We are excited to have Julia join us in Columbus,” Handrahan said. “She is a fiery competitor who has speed to burn and will be an exciting player to watch.”


 

 

Melani Moylan
Forward, 5-6
Mississauga, Ontario
High school: St. Aloysius Gonzaga
Club team: Oakville Jr. Hornets

Captained both her club team and high school team this season … named St. Aloysius Gonzaga’s team Most Valuable Player in 2010 … led high school to ROPSSAA titles in 2010 and 2012 … totaled 16 goals and 14 assists for 30 points with the Oakville Jr. Hornets during the 2011-12 regular season … notched four goals and four assists in the playoffs this season with the Hornets … attends St. Aloysius Gonzaga … daughter Diane and Peter Moylan … has a sister, Meghan, and a brother, Colin.

“Melani has all the intangibles to help us with her incredible work ethic, leadership and drive as well as a physical presence on the ice,” Handrahan said. “She will compete hard and be a very difficult player to play against.”

Cara Zubko
Defense, 5-7
Kelowna, British Columbia
High school: Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy

Named assistant captain for Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy this season and led the team to a Minnesota Thoroughbreds tournament title … a member of the 2010-11 squad that captured the CSSHL title and won the Notre Dame Tournament … three-year member of the Prairie Fire team (2007-10) … has played defense for Team Saskatchewan from 2009-12 … daughter of Lorne and Colleen Zubko … has one brother, Cody.

“Cara is a hard-nosed defenseman who plays physical and has some great offensive tools,” Handrahan said. “Her first pass is outstanding and she can shoot as well. We are happy to have her decide to be a Buckeye!”
