COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team fell to top-ranked, unbeaten Minnesota (30-0-0, 24-0-0 WCHA) by a final score of 5-3, Saturday at the OSU Ice Rink.
The Buckeyes had their chances early on, taking the lead not once but twice on the Gophers, who had only trailed three times all season coming into the game.
Sophomore Kari Schmitt struck first for Ohio State with an unassisted goal 4:53 into the first period, her fourth of the season.
Following a Megan Bozek goal for Minnesota that evened the score up at 1-all, the Buckeyes would get back-to-back power play opportunities, and senior Tina Hollowell took advantage on the second to score her 11th goal of the season at the 16:17 mark of period one. Senior Hokey Langan and Schmitt recorded assists.
Langan’s assist brought her career point total to 128, tying with Tessa Bonhomme (2004-08) for fifth place all-time at Ohio State. Schmitt now has a team-leading 20 assists this season.
The second period saw two Minnesota goals to give them the lead heading into the final period, 3-2. The first score of period two came off the stick of Maryanne Menefee at the 9:20 mark and the second was tallied by Meghan Lorence at 14:42. Amanda Kessel extended Minnesota’s lead to 4-2 at 3:03 in the third period.
Minnesota answered quickly with Kessel’s second goal of the period, 40th of the season, at 9:06, putting one by redshirt junior goaltender Chelsea Knapp, to seal the final score 5-3. Knapp finished the day with 33 saves. Shots on goal were 38-26 in favor of the Gophers.
Ohio State (16-12-2, 11-11-2 WCHA) returns to action Feb. 15-16, for a series with North Dakota in Grand Forks.
