No. 9 Buckeyes Fall 7-5 to Minnesota Duluth

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 9 Ohio State women’s hockey team dropped a 7-5 decision to Minnesota Duluth in a WCHA contest Friday afternoon in Value City Arena. The Buckeyes fall to 15-8-2 overall and 10-7-2 in conference play.
UMD (12-8-3, 11-7-1) struck early in the first when Jessica Wong scored 41 seconds into the game. Ohio State picked up its first goal at 9:37 when senior Tina Hollowell scored her ninth goal of the year.
Brigette Lacquette gave the Bulldogs a two-goal lead early in the second to take a 3-1 advantage. The Buckeyes responded with a pair of goals to lock the score at three goals apiece. Sophomore Sara Schmitt scored on a power play at 12:52, while junior Ally Tarr netted the puck in the last minute of the period. However, UMD went into the final intermission with a one goal lead after Aleksandra Vafina scored at 19:33 to make it 4-3 Bulldogs.
Another quick goal extended UMD’s lead to 5-3, but the Buckeyes rebounded with back-to-back power play goals from freshman Julia McKinnon and sophomore Kari Schmitt. UMD answered with two goals in the final 10 minutes to seal a 7-5 victory.
Tarr and McKinnon each finished with three points, having one goal and two assists each. Redshirt junior Chelsea Knapp totaled 21 saves for the Buckeyes. Bulldog goalie Kayla Black finished with 28 saves.
The two teams return to the ice Saturday, facing off at 2:07 p.m. in Value City Arena. Admission is free.
