COLUMBUS, Ohio – The ninth-ranked Ohio State women’s hockey team defeated the Huskies of St. Cloud State 3-1 on Saturday in front of an energized crowd at the OSU Ice Rink.
The Huskies struck first early in the opening period to take a quick 1-0 lead. Abby Ness scored 53 seconds in after picking up a rebound in the crease.
Ohio State scored the equalizer not long after as Ally Tarr notched her sixth goal of the season at 5:04. The London, Ontario, product sent the puck over Husky goaltender Julie Friend’s shoulder for the score with assists to sophomores Danielle Gagne and Sara Schmitt.
Tarr picked up her second goal of the game at 8:01 in the second to give Ohio State a 2-1 advantage. Skating 3-on-2 on a breakaway, Tarr sent a shot past Friend for the score with assists to Taylor Kuehl and Sara Schmitt.
Kuehl would give the Buckeyes some breathing room with a power play goal late in the third, her team-leading 12th of the season. The score, which came at the 16:32 mark of the period, was assisted by sophomore Kari Schmitt, her 16th of the season.
The Buckeyes finished 1-4 on the power play and held St. Cloud State scoreless in three attempts.
Redshirt junior goaltender Chelsea Knapp stopped 24 of 25 shots faced and picked up her 15th victory of the season. Friend finished with 25 saves for the Huskies, who were outshot 28-25 in the game.
Ohio State (15-7-2, 10-6-2 WCHA) will host Minnesota Duluth Jan. 24-25 at Value City Arena.
