COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team fell to Bemidji State by a final score of 3-2 Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink.

Following a scoreless first period, the Buckeyes jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 4:43 mark of the second period on a score from junior Kayla Sullivan, her first of the season. Assists on the play came from juniors Danielle Gagne and Kari Schmitt.

With Ohio State on a 5-on-3 power play opportunity, Bemidji State’s Tess Dusik took a rebound off the pads of Buckeye goaltender Chelsea Knapp following a 2-on-1 fast break and put it into the back of the net for a shorthanded score. The Beavers then used that momentum to add two more goals, one each from Stephanie Anderson and Hanna Moher, to carry a 3-1 lead heading into period three. Moher’s score came on a Bemidji State power play.

The third period was controlled largely by Ohio State as it outshot BSU 15-4 in the final stanza. Junior Sara Schmitt cut the lead to one goal early in the period on a nice wrap-around score. An assist came from senior Becky Allis. The goal was number three for Schmitt, who now has a team-leading 10 points this season.

The Buckeyes however were unable to convert on any other chances and the Beavers held on to win 3-2.

An altercation at the end of the game ended up resulting in nine individual game disqualifications for each team for fighting and an extra game disqualification on Ohio State for a player face-masking. The total combined penalty minutes in the game were 303, with 287 coming after the final buzzer had sounded.

OSU finished with 24 penalties for 158 minutes, both program single game records, while Bemidji State had 23 penalties for 145 minutes. Each player who received a DQ will have to sit out tomorrow’s contest.

Knapp started and took the loss, making 14 saves in just over 32 minutes of action. Senior Lisa Steffes replaced Knapp in the second period and played just over 27 minutes stopping 10 of 11 shots faced. Ohio State ended up outshooting the Beavers 33-27 in the game.

Brittni Mowat stopped 31 shots for Bemidji State. BSU finished 1-3 on the power play while OSU went 0-5.

Ohio State (3-4-1, 2-4-1 WCHA) and Bemidji State (4-6-1, 1-4-0 WCHA) will play again tomorrow at 4:07 p.m. at the OSU Ice Rink.
