Buckeyes and Huskies Skate to a 2-all Tie

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team skated to a 2-all tie with St. Cloud State Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink. Each team picks up a point in the league standings while the Huskies pick up an extra point by edging the Buckeyes in the shootout, 2-1.
Junior Taylor Kuehl got the Buckeyes out to an early lead while on a five-on-three power play, scoring her second goal of the season 7:02 into the opening period. Assists on the score were credited to juniors Sara Schmitt and Kari Schmitt.
St. Cloud State answered back with a first period goal of its own as Julia Gilbert found the back of the net at the 13:36 mark with assists from Molli Mott and Abby Ness.
Sara Schmitt gave the Buckeyes another lead 5:29 into the second, her first goal of the season. Kari Schmitt and senior Becky Allis picked up the assists. Sara and Kari have had multiple-points in each of the first two games this season and share the team lead with four points each.
The Huskies would get the equalizer on a shorthanded goal by Cari Coen at the 9:45 mark of the third and following a scoreless overtime the game went to the shootout.
In the shootout, redshirt senior Chelsea Knapp made the first stop on an attempt from Audrey Hanmer and senior Ally Tarr put the Buckeyes up 1-0 after beating SCSU goaltender Julie Friend. The Huskies then responded with two successful attempts by Amanda Monkman and Mott while Friend stopped a Kuehl attempt and sophomore Julia McKinnon sent a shot wide.
Knapp finished the game with 24 saves for Ohio State while Friend stopped 41 for St. Cloud State. OSU finished 1-7 on the power play and went 5-5 on the penalty kill in a game that saw plenty of penalties. The Buckeyes outshot the Huskies 43-26.
Game two of the series is set for 4:07 p.m. Saturday at the OSU Ice Rink.
