COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team fell 5-2 to No. 7/8 North Dakota Friday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N. D.
After falling down a score seven minutes into the first period on a goal from North Dakota’s Michelle Karvinen, senior captain Hokey Langan scored two consecutive goals to put the Buckeyes out front 2-1. Langan tied the game at 1-all 15:49 into the first and put Ohio State out front 7:24 into the second.
Her first score, which was unassisted, moved the Chatham, Ontario native into sole possession of fifth on the all-time scoring list at Ohio State, passing former Buckeye Tessa Bonhomme (2004-08). Langan tallied her 130th career point on goal number two. Sophomore Sara Schmitt and freshman Julia McKinnon picked up assists on the score.
North Dakota went on to score three straight to close the second period with strikes from Meghan Dufault, Jocelyne Lamoureux and Megan Gilbert to head into the final intermission with a 4-2 advantage. Karvinen would make it 5-2 with her second goal of the night, this one coming on the power play midway through the final period.
The Buckeyes were outshot 43-21 in the contest. Redshirt junior goaltender Chelsea Knapp stopped 38 of 43 shots faced. Freshman goaltender Shelby Amsley-Benzie stopped 19 of 21 for UND.
Ohio State (16-13-2, 11-12-2 WCHA) and North Dakota (21-10-0, 16-9-0 WCHA) play game two Saturday with opening face-off scheduled for 8:07 p.m. ET.
