COLUMBUS, Ohio - The second-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers defeated the Ohio State women's hockey team, 5-0, Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink. The Buckeyes fall to 15-12-4, 12-12-1-1 (WCHA) and the Gophers improve their record to 25-4-2, 19-4-2-1 (WCHA) in the conference match-up.
Minnesota had a fast start, scoring two goals in the first two minutes of the game. Sophomore Bethany Brausen found the net at 1:36 with the dish from sophomore Kelly Terry. Just 23 seconds later, freshman Rachael Bona connected on assists from senior Jen Schoullis and freshman Rachel Ramsey, giving the Gophers an early 2-0 lead.
In the second period, Minnesota's strong offense continued with a power play goal at 8:04 by junior Megan Bozek, assisted by senior Anne Schleper and Schoullis.
After a series of penalties, the Buckeyes and Gophers were skating evenly at 4-on-4 at 13:00 when Schleper landed a goal of her own. Sophomore Amanda Kessel and Ramsey were credited with the assists, extending the Gophers' lead to 4-0 in the second.
In the third, Schoullis was assisted by senior Sarah Erickson and Kessel on a power play goal for the final score of the game.
The Buckeyes will take on the Gophers again at 4:07 p.m. Saturday to conclude the series. Buckeye seniors Brittany Carlson, Melissa Feste, Laura McIntosh, Natalie Spooner and Kelly Wild will be honored prior to the game at the OSU Ice Rink.
