Buckeyes Roll Penn State, 8-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team improved to 4-1-0 in non-conference play this season following a 8-0 victory over Penn State Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink.
Senior goaltender Lisa Steffes stopped 19 shots to improve to 4-5-1 and picked up her second shutout of the season in the process. The Buckeyes controlled the tempo throughout, outshooting Penn State 56-19, and stayed out of the penalty box, as they were not whistled for a single infraction.
The Buckeyes took advantage of two PSU penalties in the first, jumping out to a 2-0 lead on power play goals from junior defenders Sara Schmitt and Kari Schmitt. Assists on both scores came from juniors Danielle Gagne and Taylor Kuehl. The Buckeyes finished 2-4 on their power play chances.
Ohio State took a three-score lead just under six minutes into the second period on the third goal of the season from freshman Katie Matheny after being set up by senior Becky Allis and redshirt junior Kara Gust.
Freshman Claudia Kepler scored the next two goals for the Buckeyes, finding the back of the net at 6:54 of the second after an assist from senior Annie Svedin, and scoring unassisted at 16:47 to give OSU a 5-0 advantage. Kepler now has a team-leading six goals this season.
Gagne closed out the second with her fifth score of the season with assists going to Sara and Kari Schmitt.
Two more scores were added in the final stanza, coming off the sticks of Kuehl and sophomore Kendall Curtis, their fourth and fifth goals on the season respectively. Kari Schmitt picked up an assist on the Kuehl goal while junior Kayla Sullivan and Gust tallied helpers on the Curtis score.
Ohio State and Penn State square-off again Saturday afternoon with game time set for 4:07 p.m. at the OSU Ice Rink.
