No. 22 Ohio State Travels to Georgia for NCAA Regional

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 22 Ohio State women’s gymnastics team travels to Athens, Ga., for an NCAA Regional at 4 p.m. Saturday. No. 6 Georgia earned the No. 1 seed in the Athens Regional, followed by No. 7 Michigan, No. 18 Central Michigan, No. 22 Ohio State, North Carolina State and Rutgers.

The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships in Birmingham, Ala., April 18-20, hosted by the University of Alabama and the Alabama Sports Foundation.

In addition, the event winners at each regional site will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or an all-around qualifier.

No. 24 Ohio State notched a 196.400 for a sixth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships March 22 at Rec Hall in State College, Pa.

Melanie Shaffer tied for fifth in the all-around with a career-high 39.425 and tied for second on uneven bars at 9.900.

Ohio State is one of six Big Ten teams ranked in this week’s GymInfo poll. Michigan sits seventh followed by No. 9 Nebraska, No. 11 Illinois, No. 14 Minnesota, No. 15 Penn State and No. 24 Ohio State.



The Buckeyes sit 20th on uneven bars, 22nd on balance beam and tied for 25th on floor exercise. Individually, Sarah Miller is tied for 23rd on balance beam and Melanie Shaffer is tied for 21st in the all-around.

Sarah Miller and Melanie Shaffer have garnered first team All-Big Ten honors, the conference office announced Tuesday. In addition, Victoria Aepli was named second team All-Big Ten.

With the first team All-Big Ten honor, Miller becomes the Buckeyes’ fifth four-time first team All-Big Ten selection in program history.

Victoria Aepli and Melanie Shaffer have been named captains of the 2014 Ohio State women’s gymnastics team, head coach Carey Fagan announced Jan. 10.

Ohio State head coach Carey Fagan announced the signing of three gymnasts to National Letters of Intent during the November early signing period. Megan Feltham (Lewisburg, Pa.), Heather Hannon (Indianapolis, Ind.), Taylor Harrison (Newport News, Va.), Alexis Mattern (Harrisburg, Pa.) and Stefanie Merkle (Waterloo, Ontario) each signed NLIs with Ohio State for the 2015 season.
