No. 24 Ohio State Hits the Road for Big Ten Championships at Penn State

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 24 Ohio State women’s gymnastics team travels to State College, Pa., for the Big Ten Championships at noon Saturday. The meet will be televised live on BTN. The Buckeyes are competing in the first session with Iowa, Michigan and Michigan State.

LAST TIME OUT
No. 23 Ohio State posted a 195.675 in a quad meet with Michigan State, Nebraska and Illinois last Saturday in East Lansing, Mich.

Freshman Tenille Funches tied her career-best 9.900 on vault to tie for first on the event.

IN THE RANKINGS
Ohio State is one of six Big Ten teams ranked in this week’s GymInfo poll. Michigan sits eighth followed by No. 9 Nebraska, No. 13 Illinois, No. 14 Penn State, No. 16 Minnesota and No. 24 Ohio State.

The Buckeyes sit 21st on uneven bars, 23rd on balance beam and 25th on vault. Individually, Sarah Miller is tied for 21st on balance beam and Melanie Shaffer is 24th in the all-around.

THREE BUCKEYES NAMED ALL-B1G
Sarah Miller and Melanie Shaffer have garnered first team All-Big Ten honors, the conference office announced Tuesday. In addition, Victoria Aepli was named second team All-Big Ten.


 

 

With the first team All-Big Ten honor, Miller becomes the Buckeyes’ fifth four-time first team All-Big Ten selection in program history.

B1G PRESEASON POLL
Ohio State was picked fifth in the Big Ten Preseason Coaches’ Poll, the conference office announced Dec. 12. In addition, seniors Sarah Miller and Melanie Shaffer have been named Gymnasts to Watch in the conference.

Michigan was picked first followed by Nebraska, Minnesota, Penn State and Ohio State. Illinois, Michigan State and Iowa rounded out the poll.

AEPLI, SHAFFER NAMED CAPTAINS
Victoria Aepli and Melanie Shaffer have been named captains of the 2014 Ohio State women’s gymnastics team, head coach Carey Fagan announced Jan. 10.

OHIO STATE SIGNS FIVE FOR 2015
Ohio State head coach Carey Fagan announced the signing of three gymnasts to National Letters of Intent during the November early signing period. Megan Feltham (Lewisburg, Pa.), Heather Hannon (Indianapolis, Ind.), Taylor Harrison (Newport News, Va.), Alexis Mattern (Harrisburg, Pa.) and Stefanie Merkle (Waterloo, Ontario) each signed NLIs with Ohio State for the 2015 season.
