COLUMBUS, Ohio With a 196.050 mark, the No. 19 Ohio State women’s gymnastics team claimed the fifth highest score by a Buckeye squad all-time at Ohio State. The Buckeyes (4-7, 1-4 Big Ten) were led by three career-high all-around totals, but fell short of No. 11 Alabama and host No. 17 Penn State. The Nittany Lions won the meet with a 196.650. The Crimson Tide placed second with a 196.625 team total and Ohio State placed third.

“Alabama and Penn State are two great teams and we hung with them,” Carey Fagan, Ohio State head coach, said. “Alabama has been a national powerhouse for a number of years and to beat them on a couple events was exciting. The girls handled the pressure of competing against tough competition well and to finish on bars with a season high was a nice way to end the day.”

Ohio State posted season-best team totals on bars, vault and floor. The squad totaled a 49.125 on bars and a 48.950 on vault. The Buckeyes notched a 49.100 on floor to win the event. On beam, the Buckeyes posted a 48.875.

Ohio State was once again led by freshman Taylor Jones who posted a career-high 39.300 in the all-around to finish fourth overall. She led the way on floor with a first-place finish after scoring a near-perfect and career-high 9.90. Jones scored a 9.850 on bars to tie for fourth in the meet and placed fifth on vault with a 9.825. The 9.850 score on bars marked a career high for Jones and tied with junior Hillary Dow and sophomore Rebecca Best. Jones started the meet on beam with a 9.725.

Best placed fifth in the all-around with a 39.275 followed by Dow’s 39.200 mark. Both scores were career-high totals. Best began the meet on beam with a career-high 9.825 mark to tie for sixth. She tied for fifth on floor with a season-best 9.850 and added a 9.750 to her all-around total on vault. Dow recorded career-high marks on both beam (9.750) and floor (9.825). She recorded a season-high 9.775 on vault.

Freshman Casey Williamson was a strong contributor for the Buckeyes in the meet with three solid performances. On bars and floor, Williamson posted a 9.775. She tied with junior Beth Ann Ballard on bars, as well as on vault. The duo scored a 9.80 on vault, a season-high mark for both.

Other top finishes for Ohio State included freshman Nicole Krauter with a 9.80 on beam to place second for Ohio State. Senior Kiki Holman followed on beam with a 9.775 and added a season-high 9.725 on floor. Senior Alyssa Meyer posted two solid performances with a 9.80 on bars and a 9.750 on floor. Freshman Krissi Woodward tied Jones with a 9.725 on beam and senior Amanda Surine added a 9.725 on vault.

Ohio State returns to Columbus at 7 p.m. Saturday for senior night against George Washington. The Buckeyes conclude their regular season at Auburn at 8 p.m. March 13 before heading to the Big Ten Championships March 21.
