BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The No. 14 Ohio State women's gymnastics team won its 2013 opener, 194.600-192.200, over Bowling Green Saturday afternoon at Anderson Arena.
Ohio State started off the meet on bars, winning the event 48.950-48.000. Aly Marohn, Colleen Dean and Melanie Shaffer each led the Buckeyes with a 9.825 to tie for first. The score marked a career best for Shaffer, who had not competed on bars since her freshman season two years ago.
The Buckeyes then moved to vault, where they tallied a 49.275 to top Bowling Green's score of 48.550. Sarah Miller tied her career best to take first with a 9.950 while Sarah Grady posted a career high 9.900 to finish second. After two events, Ohio State led 98.225-96.550.
Up next, Ohio State posted a 47.550 on floor exercise while Bowling Green won the event with a 47.875. Miller led the team with a 9.875 to place first.
The Buckeyes concluded the meet on balance beam, defeating the Falcons 48.825-47.775. Miller again paced the Buckeyes with a 9.875 to take the event title while Marohn followed with a 9.825 for a second-place finish.
Shaffer was the lone Buckeye to compete in the all-around, posting a 38.675.
The Buckeyes travel to Corvallis, Ore., for a dual meet against Oregon State at 10 p.m. ET Jan. 11.
