Rio Watanabe Set to Join Ohio State in January 2014

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Head coach Therese Hession of the Ohio State women’s golf team announced the signing of Rio Watanabe to a National Letter of Intent Thursday. Watanabe hails from Kamagaya City, Japan, and will join the Buckeye squad in January 2014.
“We are very excited to have Rio on board for this season,” Hession said. “She has a lot of potential and it will be great to have her part of this Buckeye team.”
Watanabe will graduate from Bentleigh Secondary College in Victoria, Australia, this month and has been a member of the Yarra Yarra Golf Club the past three seasons. Recently, she finished second at the 2013 Victorian Junior Open and fifth at the 2013 Victorian Junior Masters. Watanabe was selected to the SSV (School Sport Victoria) state team. Watanabe has represented her club at the Victorian Pennant Match Play the last three seasons.
Watanabe captured six individual titles over the 2011 and 2012 seasons, including back-to-back Joan Fisher Trophy wins and Champion of Champions victories. She finished in the top 16 at the 2012 Australian Women’s Amateur and finished among the top five finishers at Victorian Junior Girls Championship the same season.
