COLUMBUS, Ohio - After wrapping the 2011-12 season with a trip to the NCAA championship, members of the Ohio State women's golf team wasted no time preparing for their upcoming fall slate by participating in several summer events.
Presented by the National Golf Coaches Association, rising seniors Rachel Rohanna and Amy Meier tied for third at the Third Annual Pure Silk Women's Collegiate Team Championship held July 31 - August 2 at the Wedgewood Golf and Country Club in Powell, Ohio. With an even total of 288, the duo were just two strokes back from first at the tournament which consisted of rounds of alternative shot, best ball and combined team score.
Rohanna, who is set to compete in the qualifying round of the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic Monday, was also the medalist at the Judson Collegiate Invitational held July 16-18. Carding scores of 70-73-70 for an even finish at the Country Club of Roswell in Roswell, Ga., the Waynesburg, Pa., product took the win by a five-stroke margin.
Also prepping for play this week is Meier, who, after notching a score of 75 at the Country Club of Detroit in Gross Pointe Farms, Mich., has qualified for the 112th U.S. Women's Amateur to be held at The Country Club in Cleveland, Ohio, Aug. 6-12. Meier, who is the No. 19 player in the Golfweek/amateurgolf.com World Women's Rankings, will open play from the No. 10 tee at 1:10 p.m. Monday.
From Rochester Hills, Mich., Meier also made it to the semifinal round of the Women's Western Golf Association Amateur Championship at the Monroe Golf and Country Club in Monroe, Mich., June 18-23.
Sophomore Sheridan Balyeat will also tee off at the Ohio Women's Open Aug. 6-7 at the Eagle Rock Golf Club in Defiance, Ohio, while later in the month, assistant head coach Lisa Strom will take a break from coaching to compete in the LPGA Teaching and Club Professionals National Championship at the French Lick Resort in French Lick, Ind.
The Buckeyes will open the 2012-13 season at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., Sept. 17-18.
