SUGAR GROVE, Ill. -- The Ohio State University women's golf team has positioned itself nicely heading into Monday's final round of stroke play at the 2017 NCAA Championships. With 18 holes to go before the field is cut down to eight teams for match play, the Buckeyes are in fourth place out of 24 teams at 34-over (610) battling through intense weather obstacles.
Ohio State posted an 11-over 299 in Round Two, a lone shot back from the day's low round -- 298 by both event leader Northwestern and No. 1-ranked Stanford. The Buckeyes own a 10-stroke cushion over two teams currently tied for ninth place and outside the match play top-8. Teams slotted 9-15 are all within just six strokes of the coveted top-8.
Golf Channel will be providing live coverage from 4-8 p.m. ET on Monday.
The Buckeyes have buried a tournament-best 25 birdies, five more than the next closest squad (Furman and Miami with 20). Niki Schroeder leads the team individually with seven birdies, the second highest total among all 132 players. In fact, Schroeder's seven birdies are nearly matching two teams in the field which have accumulated just eight birdies apiece. The whole team is getting into the birdie act, however. Katja Pogaar and Rio Watanabe possess five birdies while Jaclyn Lee and Jessica Porvasnik have both sunk four.
Much of Ohio State's damage has come on holes of distance. The Buckeyes have registered the second lowest aggregate scores for both Par'4s (+32) and Par 5's (+2).
Four of five Buckeyes are inside the 25th percentile of the individual leaderboard. Pogacar is highest, coming in at T-14th following scores of 74-77 (+7). Lee (+9) and Porvasnik (+10) rebounded with Round Two 74's and are tied for 23rd and 32nd place, respectively. Through 36 holes, Schroeder (+10) is right next to Porvasnik with a share of 32nd place as well.
Rio Watanabe contributed a 3-over 75 to the team tally on Sunday. She is T-52nd overall at 13-over.
