Ohio State Finishes Sixth to Advance to NCAA Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – With a round three total of 296, the Ohio State women’s golf team secured a spot at nationals with a sixth-place finish at the 2012 NCAA Central Regional. The Buckeyes totaled a 908 en route to their top 8 finish on the par 72, 6,264-yard Scarlet Course in Columbus.
Ohio State reaches the NCAA Championships for the second-consecutive season and the 13th time under head coach Therese Hession. The Buckeyes’ best finish at the national tournament came in 2003 when the Scarlet and Gray finished fourth.
Southern Cal took the tournament’s top team spot, carding a three-day score of 10-over 874. USC’s Lisa McCloskey and Florida State’s Maria Salinas finished on top of the player leaderboard as each concluded with a 3-under 213.
Leading the Buckeyes all three days was junior Rachel Rohanna who concluded with a 4-over 220 for seventh place. Rohanna opened the front nine with a pair of bogeys, but offset them with two birdies on the back nine. Her crucial birdie putt on hole 18 to secure the team’s top 8 finish.
Junior Susana Benavides carded her best score of the tournament and finished the day with an even 72. Benavides, a Cochabamba, Bolivia, product, concluded the three days with a 12-over 228 to finish tied for 27th.
Team captain and junior Amy Meier put together an 18-over 234 and came in tied for 51st. Freshmen Jan Chanpalangsri and Claudia Lim had two of their best rounds of the tournament today in the first regional of their careers. Chanpalangsri totaled a 6-over 78 to finish tied for 58th with a 235, while Lim tallied a 2-over 74 for a three-day total of 237.
The Buckeyes move on to the 2012 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships held May 22-25 at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.
