COLUMBUS, Ohio – Nine student-athletes have been added to the Ohio State field hockey roster and will compete for the Buckeyes this fall, head coach Anne Wilkinson announced today. The newest student-athletes are Esther Clotet Alsina, Whitney Harris, Jennica Jonovich, Adelaide Penzone, Genevieve Penzone, Yolanda Cabello, Maartje Bongers, Irene Fritschy and Kelsey Nolan.
“I’m looking forward to coaching this new group of talented women,” said head coach Anne Wilkinson, who enters her 21st season guiding the Scarlet and Gray. “We’ve had young players in our program make a huge impact for us and I think this group complements them well with their mix of styles, experience and personalities. Throughout the recruiting process, I have watched them develop into responsible young student-athletes. I look forward to finally get the chance to coach them as Buckeyes.”
Esther Clotet Alsina | Midfield | Institut Matadepera/Barcelona, Spain
Member of Spanish Champion U-14 team, Spanish National U16 team and Spanish National U18 team that competed at the European Championships last summer. Her club Atletic Club won the Spanish National Indoor League in 2016, she scored the game winning goal in shoot outs … has competed in several international tournaments including the European Five Nations Championships … played for Atletic Club where she won the Spanish national championship and placed second in the indoor championship … has a sister, Carlota Clotet, who plays at Rider University and is a two-time All-MAAC first team selection … coaches youth field hockey for her club and is interested in pursuing a career in engineering.
Whitney Harris | Midfield/Back | Collegeville, Pa./The Shipley School
First team All-Main Line and first team All-Friends League 2012-2014 … four-year varsity starter … team Most Valuable Player in 2012, 2013, 2014 … member of WC Eagles that qualified for National Club Championships … won a gold medal at U16 Disney Showcase … member of U12 National Junior Indoor Champions … U14, U16, U19 Pool A National Indoor Tournament champion … U19 National Club champion … father played football and lacrosse at Denison and her older sister, Alayna, plays field hockey at Kent State.
Jennica Jonovich | Midfield | Wycombe, Pa./Council Rock North
Four-year varsity starter and team captain … Bucks County “Player to Watch” … had 21 goals and 20 assists in her final two seasons … Philadelphia Senior All-Star (2015) … Suburban One League first team and honorable mention all-state in 2014 … Bucks County Golden Team honorable mention (2014) … Suburban One champion for Council Rock North in 2014 … National Field Hockey Festival, U19 Mystx in 2014 … also competed in Junior Premiere Outdoor League and Junior Premiere Indoor League … third place at Junior Premier Outdoor League in 2014 … took second place at Disney Showcase (2015) and first place at National Club Challenge (2015) … also participated in swimming, lacrosse and track … member of distinguished honor roll.
Adelaide Penzone | Midfield/Back | Powell, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales
Competes exclusively with the Columbus Coyotes club team … for lacrosse, Penzone was a three-year letterwinner and earned all-league honorable mention and most valuable midfielder honors … was gold medalist in the USFHA Futures Elite program Team Tokyo in 2015 . … joined the Coyotes in 2009 … played at National Field Hockey Festival in 2013 … NIT in 2011-15, National Club Championships in 2012-13 and Disney Showcase from 2012-14 … has participated in the Futures program since 2011 … qualified for the Junior Olympics in 2014 … majorette for the DeSales marching band.
Genevieve Penzone | Forward/Midfield | Powell, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales
Twin sister of Adelaide Penzone … member of gold medal-winning team (Montreal) at Nationals … selected for the Junior Olympics … four-year member of the USFHA Futures program … plays lacrosse at St. Francis DeSales … three year letterwinner, honorable mention and All-CCL … most valuable midfielder … earned All-Ohio academic award and is a member of the National Honor Society … has an older brother who wrestles at Tiffin University. Both play with Ace Field Hockey Club in the Midwest Indoor Classic and Canadian Indoor Classic placing 2nd and 3rd respectively. Both coach the youth program at Coyotes Hockey Club and referee.
Yolanda Cabello | Goalkeeper | Madrid, Spain
Played club hockey for Pozuelo … given the U-16 national award for best goalkeeper … lists her greatest sports thrill as defeating England at the European Championships Five Nations to earn a medal … plans to investigate rare diseases after graduation … appeared in 26 episodes of a Spanish television series entitled “Ana y los siete” … her brother, Aitor Cabello, played field hockey internationally and won the bronze medal at the U-18 European Championships and silver at the U-16’s.
Maartje Bongers | Back | Nuenen, The Netherlands
Member of the U-17 and U-19 Oranje Zwart club team … two-time U-19 champions and one second place finish at the Dutch indoor hockey championships … lists her greatest sports thrill as making two penalty strokes to force a decisive third game in the U-17 national championships … three-time team captain of Oranje Zwart.
Irene Fritschy | Forward | Zwolle, The Netherlands
Transfer from St. Francis (Pa.) where she started all 17 matches for the Red Flash … second on the team in goals (10) and points (27) … tied for team-lead with seven assists … her five game-winning goals were second in Atlantic-10 ... led team and A-10 with 102 shots, 59 on goal … before St. Francis, played for Club Zwolle in The Netherlands … intends to pursue a career as a doctor.
Kelsey Nolan | Midfield | Lancaster, Pa/Hempfield
Transfer from Yale … NFHCA National Academic Squad honoree ... played in and started all 17 games last year for the Bulldogs with six goals and one assist for 13 points … took 60 shots, 34 on goal … one game-winning goal … made varsity debut in 2013 season opener Sept. 6 vs. Virginia ... appeared in four games, starting all four and scoring one goal, before season-ending injury ... first career goal came on Sept. 7 in 6-0 win vs. Sacred Heart … third team NFHCA All-American 2012 … first team all-state in 2011 and 2012 … played club field hockey for Lanco Premier and won the winter Keystone State Tournament in 2011 and 2012.
