Ohio State Falls in Regular Season Finale, 5-0

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Ohio State field hockey team dropped its regular season finale to 12th-ranked Northwestern on Friday, 5-0. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 5-12 overall and 0-6 in Big Ten play.
Northwestern improves to 15-4 and 5-1 in conference. Mona Frommhold had a team-high four shots for the Buckeyes and goalkeepers Sarah Lemieux and Sydney Stype both saw playing time. Lemieux made two saves while Stype stopped one shot. Ohio State had a 5-4 advantage in penalty corners, four of which came in the second half. Northwestern outshot the Buckeyes 12-9.
Northwestern struck first when Tara Puffenberger deflected in a shot off a penalty corner at the 15:38 mark of the first half, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Nearly eight minutes later, Lena Phillips took a pass from Kelley Stump and found the back of the cage to make the score 2-0.
The scored stayed a 2-0 through the end of the first half, but Northwestern quickly extended the lead to 3-0 seven minutes into the second half with Nikki Parsley scored off a pass from Lisa McCarthy on a penalty corner. Puffenberger added her second goal of the game at the 45:54 mark of the second half, followed by a goal from Kristin Wirtz in the 54th minute of play.
The Buckeyes will now prepare for the 2013 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament, hosted by Ohio State Nov. 7-10 at Buckeye Varsity Field. Official pairings will be announced by the Big Ten Conference following the conclusion of regular season play on Sunday.
