COLUMBUS, Ohio - Led by hat tricks by junior Paula Pastor-Pitarque and sophomore Mona Frommhold, the No. 16 Ohio State field hockey team claimed a 9-1 victory over Ball State Sunday afternoon at Buckeye Varsity Field. The Buckeyes (9-5, 1-2 Big Ten) were dominant on both sides of the turf, collecting an OSU single-game record 43 shots en route to the victory against the Cardinals (3-10, 0-3 MAC).
Ohio State collected three goals in the first half and continued its momentum in the second half, tallying six goals vs. Ball State in the final 35 minutes. Overall, Ohio State collected 24 points as a team, which tied for third on the OSU single-game points record list.
Both Frommhold and Pastor-Pitarque each claimed their first career hat trick for the Scarlet and Gray. Pastor-Pitarque, a native of Barcelona, Spain, collected a career-high seven points on three goals and an assist. Frommhold also had a career day with six points. The two combined for 16 shots, including 12 shots on goal.
Senior captain Danica Deckard notched three points on a goal and an assist. Sophomore Carly Mackessy scored her first career goal, while junior back Nora Murer scored her first goal of the season. Freshman Peanut Johnson had two assists and senior captain Laura Napolitano had an assist and a defensive save.
In the first half, the Buckeyes took a 1-0 lead after Frommhold scored her fourth goal of the season at 9:51. She dribbled to the near post before flicking a shot pass the Ball State goalkeeper.
The Scarlet and Gray made it 2-0 when Pastor-Pitarque found the back of the board at 12:55 with a blast from ten yards out on the top left side of the circle. Johnson was credited with the assist when she found Pastor-Pitarque with space in Cardinal territory.
The Buckeyes extended their lead to 3-0 in the final minutes of the first half. Mackessy tallied her first collegiate goal when she deflected in a pass by Johnson in front of the cage at 31:23. Mackessy, a native of Hudson, Ohio, becomes the tenth Buckeye to score a goal in 2012. The team held a 20-0 lead in shots in the first half.
After Ball State scored its lone goal off a rebound in the opening minutes of the second half, the OSU offense surged to score six unanswered goals in a 16-minute duration.
Pastor-Pitarque made it 4-1 when she sent a shot through the BSU goalkeeper's legs from the left side of the circle at 37:55. Murer followed when she scored her first goal of the year on an unassisted score in front of the net at 46:14. Two minutes later, Pastor-Pitarque claimed the hat trick at 48:19 on an unassisted goal from the left side of the cage.
Ohio State opened the game, 7-1, when Frommhold claimed her second goal off a corner after blasting a shot from the top of the circle to the back of the cage at 50:27 with assists from Pastor-Pitarque and Napolitano. Deckard then made it 8-1 at 52:03 on an unassisted score from seven yards out when she collected her own rebound following a corner.
Frommhold claimed the team's fifth hat trick of 2012 and ninth goal of the game at 54:53 when she dribbled down the near end line into the circle and scored in front of the net.
Overall, Ohio State held a 43-3 lead in shots and a 16-1 lead in penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper Emma Voelker improved to 9-5 overall with one save.
Ohio State returns to Big Ten action at 1 p.m. Oct. 14 against Michigan in Ann Arbor.
