Ohio State Claims 2-1 Win vs. Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State field hockey team claimed a non-conference victory against Ohio Sunday afternoon, defeating the Bobcats, 2-1, at Buckeye Varsity Field. Sophomore Annie VonderBrink and senior Mona Frommhold tallied goals for the Scarlet and Gray in the first half en route the win. The Buckeyes improve to 4-7 overall in 2013.
VonderBrink, a native of Kettering, Ohio, posted her first collegiate goal at 18:30 when the Buckeye forward found the back of the cage on a rebound from the far post to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead. She now has three points this year.
However, the Bobcats were able to tie the game, 1-1, less than two minutes later when Jessica Jue scored on a deflection from the near post following a corner at 20:03. Lauryl Desh was credited with the assist.
But the Buckeyes rebounded quickly when Frommhold, a native of Berlin, Germany, scored following a corner at 22:53 with assists from junior Nina Laudahn and freshman Brooke Hiltz. Frommhold is third on the team in points with nine this year, collecting three goals and three assists. Ohio State had a 7-6 lead in shots in the first half.
In the second half, Ohio State was able to keep possession away from its goal against Ohio as the team held a 6-3 advantage in shots and a 3-2 lead in corners.
Junior goalkeeper Sarah Lemieux improved to 3-5 this year, collecting three saves vs. the Bobcats. Laudahn had a penalty stroke opportunity but was denied by OU goalkeeper Brittany Walker at 68:51. Walker falls to 3-7 this year.
Ohio State will next travel to State College, Pa., to face Penn State at 3 p.m. Oct. 11.
