COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State field hockey team claimed a 4-3 victory at Kent State Tuesday afternoon at Murphy-Mellis Field in Kent, Ohio. Guiding the Buckeyes (3-5) to victory was freshman forward Brooke Hiltz, who posted a season-high five points on two goals and an assist vs. the Golden Flashes (4-5).

Senior midfielder Mona Frommhold scored the eventual gamewinning goal during the 54th minute with assists from Hiltz and senior midfielder Nora Murer, who had a pair of helpers, while sophomore forward Peanut Johnson also notched a goal in the first half.

In the first 35 minutes, the Golden Flashes took a 1-0 lead when Hannah Faulkerner scored at 7:19 assisted by Julia Hofmann.  After two OSU shots were blocked a minute later, the Scarlet and Gray tied it, 1-1, following a Hiltz's first career goal at 8:49 with Murer earning the helper. Ohio State took its first lead of the afternoon after Johnson tallied an unassisted score at 26:10.

But the Golden Flashes were able to the tie the game, 2-2, heading into halftime when Melanie Kahn scored at 28:44. At half, shots were 14-10 in favor of the Buckeyes with a 5-4 lead in penalty corners.

After halftime, Kent State took its second lead of the contest just 27 seconds in when Missy Ramsey found the back of the cage at 35:27. The next 15 minutes went scoreless until Hiltz tied the game, 3-3, at 51:26 with the assist from junior midfielder Nina Laudahn. Frommhold claimed the eventual game winner at 54:00 following a corner.


 

 

Junior goalkeeper Sarah Lemieux made two key saves in the final 10 minutes of action and improves to 2-3 overall in 2013, collecting six saves.

Overall, Ohio State outshot the Golden Flashes 23-19 and had an 8-6 advantage in penalty corners.

The Buckeyes open up Big Ten play at 1 p.m. Saturday at Michigan State. The game can be seen on BTN.com.
