Kelsey Mitchell Sweeps B1G Weekly Awards
Kelsey Mitchell leads the Big Ten in scoring at 25.9 ppg.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State freshman guard Kelsey Mitchell was named both the Big Ten Player and Freshman of the Week on Tuesday for her record-setting performance in Ohio State's 96-54 victory over No. 18 West Virginia.
Mitchell canned a school-record tying eight three-pointers on just 10 attempts against the Mountaineers. She finished with 39 points, breaking Jantel Lavender's freshman school-record of 36 points which she set back in 2008. Mitchell was 12-of-18 from the floor and 7-of-11 from the line.
Not only did Mitchell's performance come in Ohio State largest victory over a ranked team, she did all of her work in just 27 minutes as she was saddled with foul trouble for most of the contest.
This was Mitchell's first B1G Player of the Week honor and her second Freshman of the Week award. She was named FOW on Dec. 1, after leading the Buckeyes to a pair of victories at the Paradise Jam.
Mitchell and the Buckeyes finished non-conference play at 8-4 and will open B1G action on the road next Monday against Maryland.
