Setting the Scene

  • The Buckeyes return home to open a five-game homestand and will start it against Miami on Thursday as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
  • The game will tipoff at 7 p.m. at Value City Arena.
  • The Buckeyes are coming off a runner-up finish at the Gulf Coast Showcase last weekend.
  • OSU is 5-2 on the season with a win over No. 11 Syracuse and its only two losses coming at the hands of No. 3 South Carolina and No. 5 Baylor.
  • Miami opened the year with a loss at No. 19 Kentucky but has since won five-straight, including wins over Grambling State and Texas Tech to win the Miami Thanksgiving Tournament.
  • The Big Ten network will televise the game with Lisa Byington calling the action and Christy Winters Scott adding the expert analysis.

Noting The Buckeyes

  • Ohio State is 5-2 on the season with both of its losses coming at the hands of top-5 teams.
  • OSU is ranked No. 9 in the AP poll and No. 10 in the Coaches Poll.
  • Junior Kelsey Mitchell is now the school's all-time three-point leader as she passes Caity Matter's old mark of 270. Mitchell now has 278 career three-pointers.
  • Mitchell has scored 1,925 career points and has moved into seventh place in school history. The Big Ten preseason Player of the Year is trying to become the fastest player in NCAA history to reach 2,000 career points.
  • Stephanie Mavunga has made an impact inside this season. She has notched a double-double in three of the six games in which she has played and has been the team's leading rebounder in four of those games.
  • The Buckeyes led the Big Ten and were third in the country last season in scoring at 86.0 ppg and are also averaging 86.0 points per game through seven games this season.
  • Sierra Calhoun is second on the team in scoring at 13.4 ppg and is making nearly 40 percent of her shots from long range.
  • The Buckeyes were 273rd in the country last year with a -3.5 rebounding margin. So far this year, OSU has a +8.4 margin on the boards.
  • Kevin McGuff is in his fourth season with the Buckeyes and his 15th overall as a head coach. He has a career record of 327-138 (.703) and 72-39 (.649) with the Buckeyes. McGuff led Ohio State back to the NCAA Sweet 16 last season, marking the second NCAA Sweet 16 appearance of his career.
  • Before the end of the season, Ohio State has the potential to have four 1,000-point scorers on its roster. In addition to Mitchell, Mavunga is just 28 points away from the mark while Alexa Hart and Shayla Cooper are also within range.

Noting Miami

  • After opening the season with a loss at No. 19 Kentucky, the Hurricanes have won five straight, including a pair of games over Grambling State and Texas Tech in the Miami Thanksgiving Tournament last weekend. 
  • Four Miami players are averaging in doubles figures led by Jessica Thomas at 13.0 ppg. Adrienne Motley and Laura Cornelius are each averaging 11.3 ppg while Erykah Davenport is chipping in with 10.7 ppg.
  • The Hurricanes are making 8.5 three-pointers per game and are grabbing almost eight rebounds more per game than their opponents.
  • Head coach Katie Meier is in her 12th season at Miami and has a 212-144 record with the Hurricanes. The former Duke standout is just 12 wins away from 300 in her career.

Series History vs. Miami

  • The Buckeyes are 2-0 all-time against Miami but the two teams haven’t met since 1986.
  • Ohio State won 91-63 at the Lady Bahamas Christmas Classic in 1982 and then spoiled the Hurricanes home tournament with a 79-75 win in the championship game of the Orange Bowl Invitational in 1986.

Kevin McGuff vs. Miami

  • While head coach Kevin McGuff has played one game against Miami of Ohio, he has not coached a game yet against the Hurricanes of Miami (Fla.).

Buckeyes In the Acc/Big Ten Challenge

  • Ohio State is 2-7 in the history of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, with the first three games coming against Top 10 competition.
  • In 2007 the Buckeyes lost at No. 3 Maryland before losing a close one at home in 2008 to No. 2 North Carolina.
  • Four years ago the Buckeyes led on the road at No. 10 Duke early in the second half before the Blue Devils pulled away for the victory.
  • In 2010 Ohio State picked up its first win, a 74-46 win over Virginia at St. John Arena, before defeating Florida State, 78-75, in overtime in 2012 when Tayler Hill poured in 31 points.
