COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State senior guard Kelsey Mitchell has been named to the 12-member USA Basketball U23 National Team that will compete later this month in the Four Nations Tournament in Tokyo, Japan.
The team was selected after four days of tryouts this past week at the USA Basketball Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Mitchell and the rest of the selected team will continue training ahead of the Four Nations Tournament which runs Aug. 12-15. The USA will face Australia on Aug. 12, Canada on Aug. 13 and will close out the tournament facing host Japan on Aug. 15.
A total of 37 of the top collegiate players in the country participated in the tryouts. The group was split into four teams which competed in a tournament throughout the week which culminated with a gold medal game on Friday morning. Mitchell’s team would outlast fellow Buckeye Linnae Harper’s team 77-74 to take the top spot. Mitchell scored a game-high tying 19 points while Harper led her team with 15 points, six assists and five rebounds.
The other members of the team are Ariel Atkins (Texas), Monique Billings (UCLA), Kalani Brown (Baylor), Jordin Canada (UCLA), Asia Durr (Louisville), Sabrina Ionescu (Oregon), Brittany McPhee (Stanford), Jaime Nared (Tennessee), Arike Ogunbowale (Notre Dame), Mercedes Russell (Tennessee) and A’ja Wilson (South Carolina).
The 2017 U23 Four Nations Tournament will provide meaningful competition and development opportunities. The USA’s participation in the tournament is intended to help further develop the USA Basketball athlete pipeline and to help prepare athletes for possible future participation in the USA Basketball Women’s National Team pool.
