COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s basketball team will be part of a very strong field this year at the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Fla. The tournament will run from Nov. 25-27, 2016.
Four of the eight teams in the field (Baylor, Ohio State, Syracuse, DePaul) finished last season ranked in the top-25. The Buckeyes will open the tournament against the hometown team in Florida Gulf Coast at either 5:30 or 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 25.
“This is the deepest and most experienced top-to-bottom field in the four-year history of the Gulf Coast Showcase,” said Debbie Antonelli, ESPN analyst and Women’s Tournament Director. “The quality of the teams and the level of coaching is like an NCAA Regional. We have two top-five programs, four of the eight have been to the Final Four and Baylor has won two national championships in recent years. I'm very excited to assist in bringing three days of big-time women's college basketball to Southwest Florida.”
This is the fourth year of the tournament which is being played at the Germain Arena.
Buckeyes vs. The Field
Ohio State has faced five of the other seven teams in the event. The only previous meeting with FGCU was a thrilling 90-83 double-overtime victory for the Buckeyes at the 2014 Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands.
The Buckeyes are 4-2 all-time against DePaul with the most recent meeting coming in the 2001 Postseason WNIT in which OSU won 73-62 in Columbus. Ohio State and Syracuse have met 10 times previously with the Buckeyes holding a 9-1 edge. Ohio State won at home early in the 2008 season but Syracuse’s only win in the series came in the most recent meeting, a 75-66 win in the Carrier Dome on Dec. 11, 2010. Kent State and Ohio State have played 13 times previously (OSU leads 10-3) but not since 1981.
Baylor and George Washington are the two teams Ohio State has yet to face on the basketball court.
