COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Big Ten and Atlantic Coast conferences announced Wednesday the matchups for the 2014 ACC/Big Ten Women's Basketball Challenge with Ohio State playing host to Pittsburgh Wednesday, Dec. 3 at Value City Arena. The annual challenge, which has been extended to 2020, is in its eighth edition and will feature 14 matchups for the first time.
The Buckeyes are 10-2 all-time against the Panthers, having last met Dec. 2, 1998 in Columbus. Ohio State, 17-18 last year, returns two starters from last year’s team that advanced to the Big Ten tournament semifinals. Highlighting the returnees is first team All-Big Ten guard Ameryst Alston, who will be joined by seven newcomers – five of whom made up the No. 2 recruiting class in the country. Pittsburgh finished 11-20 last season with a 3-13 mark in the ACC. They were led by senior-to-be Brianna Kiesel, who averaged 16.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. The Panthers are coached by Suzie McConnell-Serio, who will be in her second season as head coach.
Challenge games will be contested in a two-day format, beginning Wednesday, Dec. 3. Illinois, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio State and Purdue will host games on the first day, while Indiana, Maryland and Minnesota will be on the road. On Dec. 4, Michigan State and Rutgers will host ACC foes, while Iowa, Northwestern, Penn State and Wisconsin visit their inter-conference opponents. This marks the first home game in the Challenge for Ohio State since 2011 when the Buckeyes defeated Florida State, 78-75, in overtime.
The ACC and Big Ten conference offices determine the schedule each season. In addition, the official title of the Challenge will rotate each year. The 2014 event will be referred to as the ACC/Big Ten Women's Basketball Challenge and will continue to mirror the official title of the two conferences' Challenge agreement for men's basketball.
Game times, as well as television and broadband coverage, will be announced at a later date. For more information about the ACC/Big Ten Women's Basketball Challenge log on to www.bigten.org.
