COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s basketball team, under the direction of first-year head coach Kevin McGuff, will travel to College Park, Md., to face the Maryland Terrapins Thursday, Dec. 5 in the 2013 Big Ten/ACC Women’s Basketball Challenge. This year’s challenge will mark the seventh year of an event that has been extended to 2016.
Ohio State, 18-13 last season, is facing Maryland for the second time in the Challenge after meeting in 2007 in College Park when the Terrapins were ranked No. 3 in the country. The Buckeyes are 2-2 all-time against Maryland and 2-4 in the Challenge, including wins over Virginia and Florida State. Maryland, 26-8 last season and 14-4 (T-2nd) in the ACC, is 6-0 all-time in the Challenge.
Challenge games will be contested in a two-day format, beginning Wednesday, Dec. 4. Indiana and Penn State will host games on the first day, while Illinois and Michigan State will be on the road. On Dec. 5, Iowa, Minnesota, Northwestern and Wisconsin will host ACC foes, while Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio State and Purdue visit their inter-conference opponents.
A year ago, Big Ten teams combined for a 5-7 mark against its ACC counterparts. In the past two seasons, the two conferences have squared off in head-to-head competition on 37 total occasions with the Big Ten holding a 19-18 advantage.
The ACC and Big Ten conference offices determine the schedule each season. In addition, the official title of the Challenge will rotate each year. The 2013 event will be referred to as the Big Ten/ACC Women's Basketball Challenge and will continue to mirror the official title of the two conferences' Challenge agreement for men's basketball.
Game times, as well as television and broadband coverage, will be announced at a later date. For more information about the Big Ten/ACC Women's Basketball Challenge, including a complete schedule, log on to bigten.org.
