March 3, 2014
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State sophomore guard Ameryst Alston has been named to the 2014 First Team All-Big Ten Women's Basketball team by the coaches and the media, the conference office announced Monday. Her honor marks the 10th consecutive season that at least one Buckeye has earned first team honors and is the 12th overall selection since 2005. Joining Alston among the honorees was junior guard Raven Ferguson, who earned honorable mention honors by the media. Redshirt junior Amy Scullion was Ohio State's recipient of the Big Ten's Sportsmanship Award.
Alston finished the regular season third in the conference with 20.3 ppg in Big Ten play and ranked second in minutes played (36.6) in all games. Alston shot 45.1 percent from the field, 83.2 percent from the free throw line and led the team with 99 assists and 36 steals. She is second on the team with 33 three-point field goals.
A consistent offensive threat all season, Alston scored in double-figures in all but two games and enjoyed three 30-point performances, joining only a handful of Buckeyes who have scored at least 30 points in consecutive games in their careers. Alston scored a career-high 31 points on 9 of 13 shooting in the win over Illinois Jan. 30 and dished out 10 assists for her first career double-double. She then matched that total with 31 in the loss to No. 17 Nebraska Feb. 20, hitting a career-high five three-point field goals. Then in the win vs. Northwestern Feb. 23, Alston scored 30 for a third time and hit a career-high 14 of 17 from the free throw line. She was named the Big Ten player of the week Jan. 13 after scoring 29 points on 13 of 21 shooting in the win at No. 22 and previously unbeaten Indiana. The Canton, Ohio, native went over 750 career points Feb. 23 vs. Northwestern and needs just 16 more to reach 800 in just her sophomore season.
Ferguson was a major contributor off the bench for the Buckeyes this season and was a top contender for Big Ten Sixth Player of the Year honors. The Columbus native was second on the team and 22nd in the Big Ten in scoring with 12.8 ppg in conference play, scoring in double-figures in 11 of 16 Big Ten games, including seven straight. She led the Buckeyes with 19 three-point field goals in conference play and also ranked second on the team with 5.4 rebounds, 35 assists and 20 steals. Ferguson scored a career-high 24 points in the win over Illinois Jan. 30 where she hit 7 of 11 from the field and 8 of 10 from the line.
The Buckeyes are the No. 8 seed in the upcoming Big Ten tournament in Indianapolis and will face No. 9 Northwestern at Noon ET Thursday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The game will be televised on BTN.
