Four Buckeyes Named To All-Big Ten Team

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Four Ohio State women’s basketball players were named to the All-Big Ten teams which were announced by the conference on Monday evening. Senior Ameryst Alston and sophomore Kelsey Mitchell were named to the first team while junior Shayla Cooper and sophomore Alexa Hart were named to the second team.

This is the 12-straight season in which the Buckeyes have had a first team All-Big Ten honoree, the longest streak in the conference. For Alston, this was her third-straight season earning the award while Mitchell picks up the honor for the second time.

Alston has had a tremendous senior season … she earns first team All-Big Ten honors for the third-straight year … she is just the fifth Buckeye to earn first team honors three times, joining Jantel Lavender, Jessica Davenport, Katie Smith and Tracey Hall … the model of consistency, Alston has scored more than 600 points each of the last two seasons and is just 35 points off that mark this season … she is averaging 19.5 points per game and leads the team with 113 assists … she has started each of the last 67 games and this season is averaging a team-high 36.7 minutes per contest … Alston has made a career-best 67 three-point field goals this year and has committed a career-low 74 turnovers … she became just the sixth Buckeye to reach the 2,000 career point plateau and is currently fourth in school history with 2,126 points … The Canton, Ohio native earned national Player of the Week honors on Feb. 15 after leading the Buckeyes to three victories, registering her 2,000th point and connecting on a career-best eight three-pointers in a win at Penn State … she capped her career at Value City Arena with a career-high tying 39-point effort on Senior Day vs. Illinois … Alston was also named Big Ten Player of the Week on Feb. 15, marking the third-straight year in which she has been named a Player of the Week.

Kelsey Mitchell
Mitchell was one of three unanimous first team All-Big Ten selections this year … this was her second-straight season earning first team accolades … she is the fifth Buckeye to be a unanimous first team selection … The Cincinnati, native quickly dispelled any notion of a sophomore slump and turned in a second-straight MVP-type season … after leading the country in scoring at 24.9 ppg last year as a freshman, she is besting her mark this year at 25.3 ppg … Mitchell is fourth in the country in scoring and second in the country in three-point field goals made with 105 … She is leading the team in three-point field goal percentage ( 40.2 percent) and free throw percentage (84.8 percent) … Mitchell also tops the team with 51 steals and is second with 98 assists … she tied the school’s single-game scoring record with 42 points in the win over No. 10 Texas A&M on Nov. 28 and then topped that mark with 48 points against No. 20 Michigan State last Saturday … nine times this season Mitchell has made five or more three-point field goals in a game … that shooting has led the Buckeye offense to an averaging of 88.0 points per game which is second in the country and nearly three points better than the school’s single-season scoring mark … Mitchell was named national and Big Ten Player of the Week twice this season.

Alexa Hart
Hart earned second team All-Big Ten honors by the media and was an honorable mention selection by the coaches … she was also named to the five-member All-Big Ten Defensive Team which was selected by the coaches … Hast was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team last season in addition to the All-Big Ten Tournament team … the Columbus, Ohio native had a bit of a slow start this season but quickly regained the dominant form she showed at the end of last year … Hart has started every game this season and is averaging 11.8 points and 8.1 rebounds per game … when she gets the ball down low, she usually doesn’t miss … Hart is second in the country in shooting percentage at 65.5 percent and led the conference in shooting percentage during B1G play at 68.0 percent … the long-armed Hart has swatted 74 shots this season which is second in the conference … she has blocked at least one shot in all but two games this season and in all but three games in her career … Hart is also second on the team with eight double-doubles this year and has a team-high 21 over the past two seasons.

Shayla Cooper
Like Hart, Cooper earned second team All-Big Ten honors by the media and was an honorable mention selection by the coaches … this was Cooper’s first All-Big Ten honor … the Norcross, Ga., native has provided the Buckeyes with a real spark off the bench this season … She is third on the team in scoring at 13.5 ppg and is the team’s top rebounder at 8.4 per game … Cooper also tops the team with nine double-doubles on the year … she started the season just 4-of-16 from beyond the three-point arc but his since made 13 of her last 20 attempts which has helped stretch the floor … Cooper is shooting a solid 54.9 percent from the floor and over 82 percent from the foul line … she has missed just one of her last 23 attempts from the free throw stripe … Cooper has scored a career-best 25 points in a game twice this season and has registered two 15-rebounds games as well.
