COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's basketball team shook off a sluggish start and improved its record to 9-6 with a 52-38 win over the Appalachian State Mountaineers (2-8) Friday evening at Value City Arena.
Appalachian State's defense kept the Scarlet and Gray out of rhythm offensively early on and the Mountaineers would take a 21-18 into the half.
Ohio State came to life midway through the second half with a 22-4 run, sparked by guards Raven Ferguson and Ameryst Alston, to give the Buckeyes a 40-30 lead with 5:11 remaining. The Buckeyes turned it up a notch defensively in the second half, holding Appalachian State scoreless for nearly 8 minutes to gain control.
Alston (11), Adams (13) and Cait Craft (10) were Ohio State's top scorers to help the Buckeyes secure the victory. Martina Ellerbe chipped in with six points and a career-high 11 rebounds while Darryce Moore added seven points.
In a defensive struggle, Appalachian State took control to start the game. But Ashley Adams kept the Buckeyes close with four straight field goals as Ohio State found some holes in the Mountaineers zone defense early on.
But with 11 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, the Buckeyes were unable to take more than a two-point lead. Following this, the Mountaineers went on an 8-0 run spanning 6 minutes to take the halftime lead.
The Buckeyes closed out the game at the free throw line, hitting 16 of 22 for the game compared to just six attempts for ASU.
Ohio State takes a break from game action and will return to the court at Noon Sunday, Dec. 29 at Value City Arena when they take on North Carolina Central. It will mark the last non-conference game before opening up Big Ten play Jan. 2 vs. Purdue.
