Ameryst Alston has scored 30 or more points in two of the four games this season
The win evens the Buckeyes' record at 2-2 on the year while VCU falls to 3-2 overall.
After scoring a season-low five points last game, Alston scored six points in the first two and half minutes on Sunday. She was 12-of-20 from the floor and 10-of-13 from the free throw line.
Mitchell battled foul trouble most of the game but still finished with 29 points, including five three pointers. She has made 12 three-pointers in the last two games.
Freshman Alexa Hart impacted play on both ends of the floor as she was 6-of-9 shooting for 12 points on the offensive end and also blocked eight shots on the defensive end.
Graduate student Amy Scullion made her return to the team on Sunday and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to go along with three points in 14 minutes.
VCU held a 57-36 edge on the boards and scored 23 second chance points. The Rams were led by Ashley Pegram's 25 points while Keira Robinson added 18 points and five assists.
Despite being out-rebounded, the Buckeyes did most of their work inside, scoring 48 points in the paint compared to just 28 for VCU. OSU also converted 21 VCU turnovers into 31 points.
VCU made four of its first five three-point attempts to grab an early 16-14 lead and force an Ohio State timeout. The lead grew to three at 19-16 but that's when the Buckeyes went on a 14-3 run to take a 30-22 edge after 10 minutes.
Mitchell came out on fire, hitting five of her first six shots for 12 points in the just seven minutes. But she picked up her second foul midway through the first half and went to the bench.
The Buckeyes shot nearly 60 percent in the first half which allowed them to take a 52-43 lead into the break. VCU started the game 7-of-9 from the floor and made just six of its last 32 but stayed close thanks to eight first-half three-pointers.
VCU scored the first eight points of the second half to trim the lead to one but Alston answered with four-straight points to swing the momentum right back. The run continued as Mitchell hit a pair of threes to give the Buckeyes a 70-56 lead with 12 minutes to play.
The Rams slowly chipped-away and hit three-straight three-pointers to trim the lead to 82-79 with four minutes left but again Alston answered with a driving lay-in and a pair of free throws over the next minute to restore order.
