COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (16-5, 6-1 Big Ten) thwarted a late-game run by Wisconsin (5-14, 0-6 Big Ten) Thursday night at Value City Arena to come away victorious, 70-61.
Kelsey Mitchell carried the offensive load for the Scarlet and Gray with 24 points on 8-of-17 shooting, including three trifectas. Sierra Calhoun was the only other Buckeye to score in double figures; the redshirt sophomore had 10 points in 19 minutes of playing time.
Holding a one-point advantage at halftime, Ohio State came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders to begin the second half. After allowing Wisconsin its only lead of the game (30-29), the Buckeyes rattled off a 13-3 run to expand their lead back to 11. Ohio State pushed its lead to as much as 21 (62-41) with 7:35 to play in the game.
The Badgers then utilized an 18-3 run over the next six minutes of the final stanza to cut the Buckeyes lead to six (65-59) with a little over a minute left in the contest. Mitchell went to the line and sank two free throws to essentially ice the game. Suzanne Gilreath scored a team-high 15 points for Wisconsin off the bench.
For the second-consecutive game, the Ohio State’s defense was a bright spot. The Buckeyes only allowed the Badgers to connect on 34 percent (18-of-53) of their shots, and they duped Wisconsin into committing 19 turnovers.
Stephanie Mavunga narrowly missed her ninth double-double of the season scoring 8 points and collecting 10 rebounds.
Ohio State will welcome the Fighting Illini to Columbus for a Sunday afternoon matinee starting at 5 p.m.
