COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State tallied a program-record 274 student-athletes placed on the Academic All-Big Ten team for spring and at-large sports, the Big Ten Conference announced Wednesday. In all, 1,906 spring and at-large sports student-athletes from around the conference were recognized.
For the year, Ohio State had a conference-record 489 honorees (106 fall, 109 winter, 274 spring/at-large), surpassing the 393 from a year ago and the 350 from 2015-16.
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, students must be on a varsity team, as verified by being on the official squad list as of May 1 for spring sports, who have been enrolled fulltime at the institution for a minimum of 12 months and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
Ohio State fencers Gabriela Cecchini and Aleksandra Kolmykova and golfer Will Voetsch each maintained a perfect 4.0 grade-point average. For the Buckeyes, women’s rowing led the way with 36 honorees followed by women’s track and field with 33, men’s lacrosse with 25 and women’s lacrosse with 23. Men’s track and field had 19 honorees, baseball and women’s synchronized swimming had 17 apiece and men’s volleyball, softball and women’s ice hockey each had 13. Men’s fencing notched 12 honorees, women’s fencing tallied 11 and men’s tennis recorded 10. Men’s rifle and pistol posted nine, men’s golf tallied eight and women’s golf, women’s rifle and pistol and women’s tennis each rounded out the Buckeye total with five.
