Nashville, Tenn. – The Ohio State women’s and men’s cross country teams took on the Commodore Classic Saturday morning. The women's team placed first out of 17 teams, including wins over No. 14 Missouri and No. 21 Eastern Michigan, while the men placed sixth out of 15 teams at the Vaughn's Gap Cross Country Course.
“I thought the women and men competed well today,” head coach Khadevis Robinson said. “The women ran together like a team today and came out on top. They all fought for each other and they raced with confidence.”
The women's team claimed a victory at the Commodore Classic placing first with 60 points. All five Buckeyes who scored claimed top 20 finishes. Lainey Studebaker was the top finisher for the team in the Commodore Classic placing third with a personal best 5k time of 17:34.8. This is Studebaker's second top finish of her sophomore campaign for the Buckeyes and her third in her career.
Caroline Millican and Christine Frederick closed out the Buckeyes scoring efforts taking 19th and 20th in a field of over 170 runners. In only her second collegiate race, Millican ran a personal best with a time of 17:59.9, while Frederick crossed the finish line at 18:02.5.
This is the first race the women have won since the season opener in 2016 (Queen City Invite). The Buckeyes took second at last year's Commodore Classic and shaved 27 points off to claim the title this year.
For the ninth straight race, Evan Stifel was the top finisher for the Buckeyes. The senior placed 10th (25:17.9) in a field of over 140 runners duplicating his 8k finish from last year’s Classic where he also placed 10th.
“We still haven’t ran our best five together yet, but once we do we’ll have a solid performance,” Robinson mentioned. “Our goal is to continue to improve.”
Ohio State men’s team placed sixth among 15 teams with 138 points. Running two places behind Stifel was sophomore Aaron Wood, who has now had two solid races in 2017. The Lancaster, Ohio, native crossed the finish line with a readout of 25:34.7.
Ohio State will head to the Joe Piane Invite on Friday (Sept. 29) in South Bend, Ind.
