Three Buckeyes Compete at Bill Farrell International Open
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three Buckeyes – one current and two former – competed this weekend at the Bill Farrell International Open, held this year at the New York Athletic Club.
JD Bergman, a three-time All-American from 2004-08, is ranked No. 3 on Team USA at 97kg/213 lbs. and was able to win five matches on the day to take the title. His first two wins came by technical fall and final three were by decision. In the finals, he edged Dustin Kilgore, 7-5. Bergman won his five matches Saturday by a combined score of 42-7.
Four-time NCAA champion Logan Stieber advanced to the finals at 65 kg. where he dropped a tighly-contested 8-5 decision to Jordan Oliver. On his way to the finals, however, Stieber was dominant, picking up a 10-0 technical fall in his first match and 11-0 TF in the semifinals.
Nathan Tomasello, who last week opened his redshirt sophomore season by winning at the NWCA All-Star Classic, reached the quarterfinals at 57 kg. by winning his first two matches by a combined score of 20-1. In the quarters, he fell to Daniel Dennis by a 5-2 decision.
The event is named in honor of the late Bill Farrell, former NYAC Wrestling Chairman and 1972 Olympic coach. the highest placed USA athlete per weight category in Men's Freestyle, Women's Freestyle and Greco-Roman winning a medal who has yet to qualify will earn a spot in the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials.
The 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials are scheduled for April 9-10 in Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa. The Rio 2016 Olympic Games will be in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 5-21.
