COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Another sure sign that the 2016-17 wrestling season is just around the corner: InterMat released its preseason rankings on Tuesday. In total, eight Buckeyes made the top 16 in their respective weight classes. Four are in the top three, two are ranked No. 1 and six reside in the top eight.
In the overall team rankings, Ohio State is No. 3 in the Tournament Power Index and No. 5 in the Dual Power Index. Six Big Ten schools make up the top 10 of the Tournament Power Index -- No. 2 Iowa, No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Penn State, No. 8 Nebraska, No. 9 Illinois and No. 10 Minnesota.
Headlining the list are two wrestlers who will start their juniors seasons atop the rankings -- reigning NCAA and Olympic champion Kyle Snyder (HWT) and two-time All-American Bo Jordan (174 lbs.) Snyder is 41-4 over the past two years and this past August became the youngest Olympic gold medalist in United States wrestling history. Jordan, meanwhile, has finished third nationally the past two years at 165 lbs. and is 43-5 since entering the lineup in 2014-15.
Also moving up a weight class this winter in redshirt junior Nathan Tomasello, the 2015 NCAA champion at 125 lbs who is No. 3 at 133 lbs. A two-time All-American, he is 60-5 over the last two seasons and won 43 straight matches during a stretch from January 2015 through March of 2016.
After becoming just the 15th true freshmen in NCAA history -- and first Buckeye -- to win a NCAA title as a true freshman (174 lbs.), Myles Martin begins his sophomore campaign at No. 2 at 184 lbs. Martin makes his season debut on Nov. 5 in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 battle with Cornell's Gabe Dean at the NWCA All-Star Classic in Cleveland.
A pair of redshirt sophomores -- Micah Jordan (141 lbs.) and Jake Ryan (157 lbs.) -- are No. 8 in the rankings. Jordan (26-4) narrowly missed All-America honors last season while Ryan was 17-7 overall and 9-2 in duals.
Rounding out the group of ranked Buckeyes are two newcomers to the line-up -- redshirt freshmen Ke-Shawn Hayes (141 lbs.) and Kollin Moore (197 lbs.). Hayes, 29-1 last winter while competing in open tournaments, is No. 13 while Moore, who made the Jr. World Team this past summer, is No. 16.
The 2016-17 season officially kicks off on Saturday, Nov. 5 at the NWCA All-Star Classic and Eastern Michigan Open. On Thursday, the Scarlet and Gray will hold its annual Wrestle Offs inside French Fieldhouse beginning at 7:45 p.m. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.
