McKenna Secures U23 World Championship Team Membership

ROCHESTER, Minn. – Buckeye wrestler Joey McKenna booked his ticket to Bydgoszcz, Poland to compete as a member of Team USA for the U23 World Team Championships (Nov. 21-26). McKenna, the top seed at 65 kilograms, recorded four match victories on Sunday (Oct. 8) to secure his spot on the national team.

Fellow Buckeyes Myles Martin and Nathan Tomasello also competed in the Team Trials, each advancing to the best-of-three finals in their respective weight classes.

McKenna followed up a first-round bye with a 10-0 tech fall over Dylan Thurston (Illinois) and 3-2 decision to get past Brock Zacherl (Clarion) and move on to the finals. Oklahoma State’s Boo Lewallen awaited in the final series. McKenna won back-to-back bouts, 5-1 and 8-4, to take the series.

Tomasello (57 kg) began his day with consecutive tech falls over Gage Curry (American) and Tim Lambert (Nebraska) before dropping his finals series. Martin (86 kg) racked up three triumphs en route to his finals series destination.
