COLUMBUS, Ohio Catherine Shields of the Ohio State rowing team and Logan Stieber of the Buckeye wrestling squad were named the 2013-14 Ohio State Female and Male Athletes of the Year, respectively. The duo will be placed on the ballots for the Big Ten Female and Male Athlete of the Year awards.

A sophomore from Rangiora, New Zealand, Shields is a 2014 Pocock First Team All-American and Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) First Team All-Central Region. In the Big Ten, Shields earned 2014 Big Ten Athlete of the Year honors and was named First Team All-Big Ten. Part of the Buckeyes’ second-consecutive Big Ten and NCAA team championships in 2014, Shields rowed in the First Varsity Eight that won the program’s first NCAA 1V8 title. Additionally, Shields, an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete, and the First Varsity Eight earned a pair of Big Ten Boat of the Week awards in April. For the second-consecutive year, a rower has earned the distinction of Ohio State Female Athlete of the Year. Claire-Louise Bode was the recipient last year as a junior.

In 2014, Stieber, a junior from Monroeville, Ohio, earned 2014 All-America and All-Big Ten laurels. The first Buckeye to win three NCAA championships, Stieber posted a 30-1 mark in 2013-14, improving his career win total to 90-3 (.968), which ranks No. 1 all-time in the Ohio State records book. The 2014 team captain and USA Wrestler of the Week (Nov. 5, 2013) not only finished the season with his third national title, but did so in dominating fashion as four of his five matches were won via bonus points. Leading the nation with 11 technical falls at the conclusion of the 2013-14 campaign, Stieber’s 28 victories out of 30 were bonus point wins. In all, Stieber collected seven major decisions and 10 falls to go along with his 11 technical falls. Stieber is the second Buckeye wrestler to be named Ohio State Male Athlete of the Year. Current Buckeye assistant wrestling coach J Jaggers was lauded with the prestigious honor in 2009 following his senior season.
