COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Kyle Snyder added perhaps the most impressive win to his already outstanding 2014-15 season, capturing the U.S. Open freestyle title on Saturday over 2012 Olympic gold medalist Jake Varner at 96 kg/213 lbs. in Las Vegas. Snyder was also named the Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Snyder, a 2013 Junior World champion, took control in the second period before holding off Varner to claim his first U.S. Open title. He shot in on a single-leg attack and scored a pushout for what proved to be the winning point. The top five finishers in each weight class qualified for June's World Team Trials in Madison, Wis.

In his rookie season this past year with the Buckeyes, Snyder went 30-4 with a team-high 15 major decisions and two technical falls. He was the Big Ten and NCAA runner up at 197 pounds, finishing 15-1 in the regular season against Big Ten competition that included a 12-match winning streak from Jan. 11-March 8.

Former Buckeye and two-time World Team member Reece Humphrey held off past NCAA champion Kendric Maple 7-6 to win the crown at 61 kg/134 lbs. Humphrey claimed his third Open title. Another wrestling alum, JD Bergman, placed third is the 96 kg/213 lbs. class.

Four-time national champion Logan Stieber, who graduated from Ohio State on Sunday, won three wrestleback matches on Saturday, including a 9-6 decision over Frank Molinaro and tech fall against Jayson Ness. He finished fourth in the 65 kg/143 lbs. division, punching his ticket to the World Team Trials. The Buckeyes' other NCAA champion from last season, Nathan Tomasello, just missed out on placing after battling back in the werstleback round that included a technical fall and 10-5 decision over seasoned-veteran Brad Pataky.

At the FILA Juniors, Micah Jordan won by technical fall at 70 kg/154 lbs. to secure a spot in the semifinals before eventually finishing fifth. Incoming freshman Myles Martin's tech fall in the quarterfinals earned him a sport in the semifinals, and he ended up placing second at 84 kg/185 lbs.
