COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Ohio State wrestling team celebrated another highly decorated season at the annual team banquet in the Cartoon Room at the Ohio Union on The Ohio State University campus Sunday.
The Buckeyes, who placed fifth at the NCAA championships in St. Louis, Mo., this past March, boasted four All-Americans, including a team record three freshmen, in Nick Heflin, Hunter Stieber, Logan Stieber and Cam Tessari.
Receiving the inaugural Tommy Rowlands Greatest Asset Award, which is awarded to the team’s most all-around student-athlete, was L. Stieber. Stieber was the 2012 NCAA and Big Ten Champion and later was named InterMat Freshman of the Year.
Four Buckeyes were the recipients of the Russ Hellickson Award, named for the former Buckeye head coach. The Russ Hellickson Award is given to the Most Valuable Wrestler of a selected competition. Taking home the awards were Bo Touris, Andrew Campolattano, Derek Garcia and L. Stieber for their performances against Purdue (recap), Michigan (recap), Iowa (recap), and Virginia Tech (recap) and Indiana (recap), respectively.
Randy Languis was awarded the Battling Buckeye Champion award. A reserve who demonstrates excellent work ethic at practice and various open tournaments throughout the season is the recipient of the laurel. Kyle Visconti and Joe Grandominico also were Battling Buckeye honorees.
