COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State wrestling letterwinners J.D. Bergman and Reece Humphrey won titles in their respective weight classes at the Las Vegas/ASICS U.S. Open Saturday. The pair of former Buckeyes was two of five Ohio State wrestlers who placed in the Top 7 of the event. Joining Bergman and Humphrey as qualifiers for the U.S. World Team Trials in June in Stillwater, Okla., are Colt Sponseller, Logan Stieber and Nikko Triggas. Complete Results
Wrestling at Ohio State from 2004-08, Bergman, an NCAA heavyweight runner-up in 2008 and three-time All-American, defeated Chris Pendleton of Laramie, Wyo., 1-0, 2-1 in the 96kg final. Humphrey (2006; 2008-10) was a 1-0, 1-0 victor over Olympic Bronze Medalist Coleman Scott in the 60kg weight class. Humphrey finished his career at Ohio State as a two-time All-American and NCAA runner-up in 2009 at 133 pounds.
Two-time NCAA 133-pound champion Stieber finished fourth following a 3-1, 3-0 setback to Tyler Graff of Loveland, Colo., in the third-place matchup. Stieber wrestled in the 60kg class.
Wrestling Greco-Roman while his Buckeye counterparts participated in the freestyle competition, Triggas was a fourth-place finisher in the 55kg class when he dropped a 0-2, 2-0, 2-0 decision to Nate Engel of Colorado Springs, Colo. Triggas recently wrapped up his Buckeye career in March as a four-time NCAA championships qualifier and 2010 All-American. The Moraga, Calif., native also ended his career tied for second place in the Ohio State records book for falls with 47.
A letterwinner from 2008-11, Sponseller concluded the U.S. Open with a fifth-place finish. Sponseller handed Moza Fay of Colorado Springs, Colo., a 1-0, 1-0 loss in the 74kg fifth-place matchup. Sponseller was a 2011 All-American.
