ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Ohio State opened competition at the 2017 NCAA Championships by winning seven of nine first-round matches, including six by bonus points to rack up critical points in the team race. The Buckeyes are currently third with 14 points, just one behind second-place Oklahoma State and two behind leader Penn State.

The first W put on the board for Ohio State came from the nation’s top seed at 133 pounds, redshirt junior Nathan Tomasello. Tomasello fell behind 2-0 early, but then got rolling to improve his record this season to 20-0.

Competing in his first NCAA Championships, true freshman and 12th-seeded Luke Pletcher scored a decisive third period takedown to defeat Michigan’s Salvator Profaci by decision, 8-5. Moments later, fourth-seeded Micah Jordan scored the first of two Ohio State technical falls in the opening round with a 21-6 win over unseeded Troy Heilmann of North Carolina.

In the upper weights, third-seeded Bo Jordan took Josef Johnson down four times and won by major decision in his opening match, 10-1. Myles Martin and Kollin Moore also followed with major decisions and Kyle Snyder capped the first session with a 25-10 technical fall over Buffalo’s Jake Gunning.

BIG POINTS
In Ohio State’s seven wins, Buckeye wrestlers averaged 17.1 points and reached the 20-point mark four times. Snyder scored 12 takedowns in his match and has 98 of the year in just 13 matches (7.5 per match).
