Kyle Snyder Named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Kyle Snyder, a true freshman on the Ohio State wrestling team, has been named the USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week, the organization announced today.
Snyder, ranked third nationally by InterMat, knocked off two-time All-America and sixth-ranked Scott Schiller of Minnesota, 3-1, to clinch the Buckeyes’ 22-13 dual match victory over then-third-ranked Minnesota last Friday at The Schottenstein Center. Now 22-2 on the season, Snyder went ahead 1-0 early in the second period on an escape and then scored a takedown with under 20 seconds left in regulation to break a 1-1 tie.
Ohio State’s win over Minnesota was the highest-ranked opponent the Buckeyes have knocked off since defeated No. 2 Iowa, 21-9, on Jan. 20, 2012. The Buckeyes (12-3) also rose to No. 3 in this week’s NWCA Top 25 poll.
A native of Woodbine, Maryland, Snyder leads the team with 12 major decisions so far this season. He and the rest of the Buckeyes are back in action this weekend, traveling to No. 15 Edinboro (13-4) in the opening round of the EAS Sports Nutrition/NWCA National Duals on Sunday at 1 p.m.
