COLUMBUS, Ohio – Kyle Snyder, a true freshman on the Ohio State wrestling team, has been named the Big Ten Co-Wrestler of the Week, the conference announced today.
Synder, ranked fifth nationally by InterMat and seventh by Amateur Wrestling News, knocked off reigning All-America and fourth-ranked Morgan McIntosh of Penn State, 6-1, to clinch the Buckeyes’ 22-15 dual match victory over third-ranked Penn State last Sunday. Now 15-2 on the season, Snyder went ahead 1-0 early in the second period on an escape and then scored a takedown with 45 seconds left in the period for a 3-0 lead. Snyder notched one more takedown in the third period and also racked up over two minutes of riding time for the final 6-1 decision.
Ohio State’s win over Penn State was its first over the Nittany Lions since 2010 and the highest-ranked opponent the Buckeyes have knocked off since defeated No. 2 Iowa, 21-9, on Jan. 20, 2012.
A native of Woodbine, Maryland, Snyder leads the team with eight major decisions so far this season. He and the rest of the Buckeyes are back in action this weekend, taking on Michigan State on Friday (7 p.m.) and No. 15 Michigan (2:00 p.m.) on Sunday.
