COLUMBUS, Ohio - Sophomore Myles Martin took eighth place at 184 lbs. while true freshman Luke Pletcher bowed out in the consolation rounds to conclude Ohio State's efforts at the 54th Ken Kraft Midlands on the campus of Northwestern.
MARTIN WINS MATCH NO. 17
Martin's day started with a 6-3 decision over Chris Weiler of Lehigh in the sixth round of the consolation bracket. The match was essentially decided for Martin when he started the third period on bottom and reversed Weiler, extending his lead to 6-2. Martin scored two first period takedowns, one just as time expired to make the score 4-1.
In the next round against Pete Renda from NC State, Martin got out to an early 2-0 lead but couldn't score the rest of the way, eventually dropping a 9-2 decision. Renda finished third last year at the NCAA Championships. Martin (17-3) medically forfeited the eighth place match to NC State's 16th-ranked Michael Macchiavello.
PLETCHER EXITS IN CONSOLATION ROUND
Pletcher's run at the Midlands Championships ended in the sixth round of consolation competition as he was edged by Iowa State's Kanen Storr, 5-4. Storr, also a true freshman, scored takedowns in both the first and second periods and then staved off Pletcher's third period attempt at a tying score. Overall, Pletcher (17-2) went 3-2 at Midlands with and is now 9-2 since moving up to 141 lbs. on Dec. 8.
The Buckeyes return to the Big Ten schedule next Friday, Jan. 6, when it travels to Madison, Wisc. for a date with the 17th-ranked Badgers (3-0, 1-0). The dual came be seen live on BTN Plus. Two days later, on Jan. 8, Ohio State welcomes 11th-ranked Rutgers (6-1, 1-0) to St. John Arena for a dual beginning at noon. That matchup will be broadcast live on BTN.
