Buckeyes Conclude Preseason With Annual Wrestle Offs
COLUMBUS, Ohio – In its final tune up before the 2015-16 season officially begins, the defending national champion Ohio State wrestling team held its annual wrestle offs before a large crowd of fans and coaches at French Fieldhouse. The event is run in conjunction with the annual coaches clinic.
To start out the match, reigning NCAA champion Nathan Tomasello racked up points fast and furious in a 21-4 technical fall over Mike Manuche. Tomasello now prepares to compete Sunday in the NWCA All-Star Classic against Zeke Moisey of West Virginia – a rematch of the 125 lb. NCAA final last March.
Redshirt senior Johnni DiJulius also picked up an impressive win, jumping out to a 9-0 lead in the second period and cruising to an 11-4 decision of true freshman Jose Rodriguez. The next match at 141 pounds pitted two highly-touted underclassmen – redshirt freshman Micah Jordan and true freshman Ke-Shawn Hayes. Jordan, who was 31-3 last year in open tournaments, broke a scoreless tie at the end of the first period with a takedown and then continued to go on offense in the second, getting a three point near fall as time expired. He went on to earn a major decision, 15-3.
At 149 pounds, Matt Davis edged Blake Riley-Hawkins, 4-3. Davis was able to fend off a late takedown attempt by Riley-Hawkins at the end of the match to preserve his lead. Another impressive redshirt freshman was Jake Ryan, who scored eight first period points and never looked back in a 17-6 major decision of Anthony DeCarlo.
Justin Kresevic shut out Seth Williams at 165 pounds, 5-0, setting the stage for true freshman Myles Martin to impress the crowd with his 14-4 major decision over Dominic Prezzia. One of the most highly rated recruits in the country, Martin led 4-1 after the first period, got two more takedowns in the second period and also locked up riding time.
Jack Rozema edged returning All-American Kenny Courts, 3-2, at 184 pounds thanks to strong defense in the final 30 seconds to fend off several takedown attempts by Courts. Rozema, a redshirt sophomore from Wyoming, Mich., was 13-6 last year in open tournaments.
Prior to the match, the Buckeyes honored Brad Jennings and his family for its $2.5 million gift to the new wrestling practice facility, which will bear their family name upon completion in 2017.
