COLUMBUS, Ohio– A pair of Buckeye wrestlers in senior Nick Heflin and redshirt-junior Logan Stieber advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships Thursday night after posting their second-consecutive win to open the event. Wrestling at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla., Heflin and Stieber will seek a bid to the semifinals when action continues at 11 a.m. ET Friday.

As a team, Ohio State currently is in sixth place with 19.5 points. Penn State leads the field with 26.5 points, while Minnesota and Oklahoma State are tied for second place with 21.5 points apiece.

The Scarlet and Gray remain in the Top 10 in large part to bonus point victories scored by Stieber as well as medical forfeit and medical injury advancements by Heflin.

After opening his third NCAA championships with a fall, Stieber, the No. 2 seed, posted a 17-1 technical fall over Oklahoma State’s and No. 15 seed Anthony Collica in the second round. In the quarterfinals, Stieber will face No. 10 Todd Preston of Harvard.

The No. 1 seed, Heflin advanced to the quarterfinals, where he will face Binghamton’s Cody Reed, via an injury default from Navy’s Paul Rands and a medical forfeit by Stanford’s San Scherer.

A host of other Buckeyes will vie for a Top 3 finish at the 2014 edition of the championships after early-round losses. After dropping a 9-3 decision to No. 5 seed Dylan Peter of Northern Iowa, redshirt-freshman Nick Roberts rebounded with a 10-5 victory vs. David White of Binghamton. Up next, Roberts will wrestle No. 11 seed Robert Deutsch of Rider.

Redshirt-sophomore Johnni DiJulius suffered a close 2-0 setback in the second round to No. 8 seed David Thorn of Minnesota. DiJulius, the No. 9 seed, will face Dennis Gustafson of Virginia Tech Friday morning.

No. 14 seed and sophomore Mark Martin answered his 7-2 loss in the opening round to Conner Brennan of Rider with a 5-3 win against Jakob Scheffel of West Virginia to advance in wrestlebacks. Up next for Martin is Mike Dessino of Bloomsburg.

The 10th seed, Kenny Courts began the 2014 championships with an 8-4 win against North Dakota State’s Kurtis Julson, but suffered a 13-8 loss to No. 7 seed Kevin Steinhaus of Minnesota in the second round. The Buckeye redshirt-sophomore will meet another Big Ten foe in No. 9 seed Domenic Abounader of Michigan next.

Redshirt-freshman Nick Tavanello began his first NCAA championships with a 3-1 sudden victory loss in pigtails vs. Ty Walz of Virginia. However, Tavanello has answered his early loss nicely with consecutive falls. Tavanello first pinned Evan Knutson of North Dakota State in 47 seconds, a season best, before pinning Nebraska’s Collin Jensen in 3:41.

With back-to-back losses senior 149-pounder Ian Paddock was eliminated from competition. A native of Warsaw, N.Y., Paddock finishes his Ohio State career as a four-time NCAA championships qualifier and three-time team captain. Academically, Paddock is a NWCA All-Academic Team member, two-time Academic All-Big Ten recipient and four-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete.
