ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Five Buckeyes remain alive in the championship brackets after two sessions of the 2017 NCAA Wrestling Championships, and all five advanced on Thursday night in dominant fashion.
THE SHORT STORY
Bonus point wins by Nathan Tomasello, Micah Jordan, Kollin Moore and Kyle Snyder along with a 10-4 victory from Bo Jordan set up a big Friday morning quarterfinal session tomorrow. Those five winners totaled three major decisions and a technical fall as the Buckeyes currently stand in second place overall with 26.0 points, 4.5 behind leader Penn State. Oklahoma State is third with 25.5 points.
TOMASELLO SURPASSES THE CENTRY MARK
Tomasello, the top seed at 133 lbs., won by major decision for the second time on the day as he controlled the pace against Cam Sykora of North Dakota State and rolled to a 21-7 victory. Ohio State's active career leader in winning percentage, Tomasello also won his 100th career match on Thursday. He's 21-0 this year, 101-5 in his career and has won 64 of his last 65 matches.
PLETCHER NEARLY PULLS OFF AN UPSET
Pletcher met sixth-seeded Anthony Ashnault of Rutgers for the third time this season and nearly pulled off an upset, leading 7-5 in the third period before giving up a takedown and eventually being ridden out to give Ashnault the riding time bonus point.
JORDAN BROTHERS MOVE ON; MARTIN UPSET
Micah and Bo Jordan combined to defeat their second round opponent by an aggregate score of 20-6 as both moved on to Friday morning's quarterfinals. Moments before B. Jordan locked up his win, Martin was upset by 11th-seed Emery Parker of Illinois, 14-9. Tied at 2-2 in the second period, Parker pulled off a six-point move (2TD, 4NF) and, despite scoring late, Martin wasn't able to recover.
MOORE, SNYDER WIN BIG
Six takedowns and a four-point near fall for Moore guided him to a 16-4 major decision at 197 lbs. A six-point swing for him in the first period turned a 4-2 lead into an 8-2 advantage. Snyder, meanwhile, took Garrett Ryan of Columbia down 11 times and scored his second technical fall of the day, 22-7. He scored 47 points and had 23 takedowns in his first two matches.
CONSOLATION BONUS POINTS
125-pounder Jose Rodriguez pinned Oklahoma's Christian Moody in 2:51 in the first round of the consolation wrestlebacks, earning 2.5 points in the team race. It's the second time in the last two weeks he's picked up a pin in the consolation round after a fall against Ben Thornton of Purdue is the seventh place match at the Big Ten Championships.
Cody Burcher wasn't as fortunate, dropping a 3-0 decision to Oklahoma's Yoanse Mejias in the opening round of wrestlebacks at 165 pounds, 2-1. Burcher was taken down in the closing seconds of the first period those proved to be the decisive points.
